With a grant from the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), the Public Health Projects in Africa (PHPAfrica) is implementing a project aimed at strengthening and harmonizing Health Research Ethics in Zimbabwe. The project is entitled “Strengthening and harmonizing Health Research Ethics through collaborative partnerships and joint training of the Zimbabwean Forum of Research Institutions (ZIMFRI)”.  In order to maximize utilization of existing expertise and meagre resources, PHPAfrica spearheaded the formation of the Zimbabwe Forum of Research Institutions (ZIMFRI) through which strengthening and harmonization of Health Research Ethics in Zimbabwe is being done.

There are several research institutions which conduct health research, and some of them do not have institutional review boards (IRBs) due to lack of knowledge about IRBs and how to establish them. At institutions where IRBs exist the project will strengthen ethical review procedures and standards by harnessing the expertise already in the country, Zimbabwe, as well as expertise from our collaborators from other countries. The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) based in Italy, which is currently collaborating with the Italian Medicines Agency in a project for the promotion of ethics in developing settings, is collaborating with PHPAfrica in building capacity in health research in Zimbabwe as well as in other African countries.
